Like every other human who's ever lived, you are unable to know true peace because your sin has separated you from God (see Romans 3:23). Ever since Adam chose to act against God's command, people don't naturally live the way He created them to. We all have a natural tendency to do things we know we shouldn't and prefer to go our own way than to listen to our Heavenly Father's loving advice. As we continue to live contrary to His will (as we naturally do), our debt of offenses, our sins, add up. But even with this overwhelming debt, God's love did not waver! ...Did you really hear that? God still loves you.
I know you've heard that God loves you before, but His love is different than our love. Our love is fickle and can change easily when we get hurt or offended, but God is unchanging, so His love for us is unfailing. It does not waver when we stumble, hurt others or even offend Him. Rather, His heart swells with compassion for us, desiring for us to know Him, the freedom of His ways, and the true life found only in Him. Though your sins keep you from experiencing His love, God has always loved you and acted for your good.
God's love for us was most clearly revealed when He sent His only Son, Jesus, to become human and pay the full price for your sins at the cross. Death is where sin inevitably leads, so Jesus died voluntarily in your place. He took all the punishment you and I truly deserve. Your debt has been paid!
This is how much God loved the world: He gave His Son, His one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in Him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.
God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again.
